Course Outline

The aim of this training program is to provide candidates with the knowledge and understanding required to act responsibly when selling, supplying or promoting alcohol in relation to their responsibilities, workplace duties, the law, customer service, and duty of care and harm minimisation.

There are over 12,000 licensed venues including: bars, hotels, pubs and clubs, retail liquor outlets, restaurants, functions, and events in NSW employing full time and part time staff. It is required, by law, for people working in these venues (those involved in the sale, supply or promotion of alcohol) to have completed an approved Responsible Service of Alcohol training course. Candidates holding a Liquor Administration Board fully approved RSA Certificate will be eligible to apply for positions in these licensed venues.

This Responsible Service of Alcohol course is accredited under the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF), Vocational Education and Training Accreditation Board (VETAB NSW), and is approved by the Liquor Administration Board (LAB) as satisfying the RSA training provisions.

Upon successful completion of this course, candidates will receive a VETAB accredited “Responsible Service of Alcohol” Statement of Attainment (SITHFA009A) and a NSW Liquor Administration Board “Responsible Service of Alcohol” Certificate enabling candidates to apply for positions in licensed bars, hotels, pubs and clubs, retail liquor outlets, restaurants, functions, and events.

 

Duration and Hours.

  • 1 day RSA course (Responsible Service of Alcohol)
  • Day 9:15am to 4:00pm
  • 6 hours face to face with a qualified RSA
    (Responsible Service of Alcohol) trainer

 

Entry requirements.

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • A reasonable understanding of English

 

What to bring.

  • Candidates must bring one form of original photo ID on the day of the course (passport, Australian Drivers License or RTA Proof of Age Card.

Course Outcome.

Following your successful completion of the RSA course you will receive :

 

  • A NSW Office of Liquor Gaming and Racing RSA Certificate (endorsed by the NSW OLGR)

The course is designed for those working in New South Wales, and is accredited with the NSW Office of Liquor gaming and Racing (OLGR) However, the certificates are acceptable in most states of Australia. Below is a state by state list of which certificates are acceptable. If you are planning to work interstate (i.e., out of NSW) you are advised to ensure the regulations haven’t changed since this list was compiled in
Janaury 2009. As laws change please make sure to check with the official OLGR website for updates.

New South Wales
The OLGR RSA certificate is accepted.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT)
The Nationally Accredited RSA Certificate is accepted.

Northern Territory
The Nationally Accredited RSA Certificate is accepted.

South Australia
The Nationally Accredited RSA Certificate is accepted. However you need to apply to the SA Liquor Licensing Commission to be approved as a responsible person. Part of this process will be to supply evidence of the national RSA certificate

Tasmania
The Nationally Accredited RSA Certificate is accepted.

Western Australia
The Nationally Accredited RSA Certificate is accepted.

Victoria
The Nationally Accredited RSA Certificate is accepted with certain conditions. It is deemed suitable for staff working in the hospitality industry except for: ‘Anyone applying for a liquor license’, Anyone working in packaged liquor (bottle shop) and anyone working in a venue where it’s a condition of the licensee’s liquor license that all staff must complete a RSA course approved by the Director of Liquor Licensing’ These are normally venues that are open after 1am and have amplified music.

Queensland
As of the 1st of January 2009 the Nationally Accredited Responsible Service of Alcohol no longer meets the Queensland requirements. Staff members employed after 1 January 2009 will be required to complete the Queensland training within 30 days of commencing employment. Staff members employed prior to 1 January 2009 have until 30 June 2010 to complete the required Queensland training.
